Bonhoeffer: When Silence Becomes a Decision

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life confronts every pulpit leader with a difficult question: What does faithfulness require when government and culture move against human dignity, conscience, and Religious Liberty?

Bonhoeffer opposed the Nazi regime, resisted its attempt to control the German church, helped form the Confessing Church, and ultimately joined resistance efforts against Hitler. He was imprisoned and executed in April 1945. His circumstances were far more extreme than ours, and Godly Civics^TM  does not equate present American political disagreements with Nazi Germany. His enduring lesson is narrower and more important: there are moments when Christian conviction requires costly civic courage.

Our constitutional instrument today is peaceful. WTP possess speech, assembly, petition, elections, and the ballot. We do not need Bonhoeffer’s circumstances to learn from Bonhoeffer’s courage.

Pray for even a mustard seed of that courage in doing our Abba Father’s work for Social and Religious Liberty.

The Battle Is Spiritual Before It Is Political

Godly Civics^TM begins with Ephesians 6, not with a political faction. “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood.” That changes how believers see people who disagree with us. Human beings are not the enemy to be condemned; they are people to be reached with Truth, love, evidence, and better Governing Principles.

Daniel 10 provides believers with a biblical picture of the spiritual conflict surrounding earthly kingdoms. Revelation 12 likewise describes the dragon as the deceiver of the world and as making war against those who keep God’s commandments and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Whatever one’s conclusions about prophetic timing, Scripture gives pulpit leaders no basis for treating the spiritual dimension of human affairs as irrelevant.

That is why Godly Civics^TM refuses to make Red versus Blue the Christian battlefield. Political factions contain human beings we are called to love. The deeper battle is Truth versus deception, Liberty versus control, righteous governing Principles versus destructive ones, and faithfulness versus disengagement.

Redeem People; Do Not Condemn Them

The Body of Christ’s mission is to change hearts and minds, but many believers hesitate because they think they must win a confrontation. They do not.

A person can encounter Godly Civics^TM , Liberty Civics, or WePEG1787^TM privately, without being cornered in a political argument. That matters. Changing a deeply held political identity can involve embarrassment, defensiveness, and fear of admitting error. Truth served with love gives people room to reconsider without humiliation.

The practical assignment can therefore be remarkably simple: make the resources known and invite people to examine them. Godly Civics^TM  speaks to believers. Liberty Civics makes the Social Liberty case without requiring a faith premise. WePEG1787^TM presents Governing Principles that can be scored and examined on their merits.

We do not need to be the convincer.
We need to put the measure in people’s hands.

Our Abba Father’s Wisdom for Everyone

Social Liberty belongs to every citizen, like the sun and rain. Religious Liberty lives inside it. The civic question is therefore not whether government can be ruled by the words “God says.” The First Amendment rightly prevents the government from establishing one religious authority over everyone.

But our Abba Father’s wisdom does not cease to be wisdom because government cannot enforce theology. “You shall not murder” expresses a moral truth that society can recognize as essential to ordered Liberty. “Honor your father and your mother” expresses wisdom about Family even where every implication cannot or should not become statute.

This is where the Laws of Nature become indispensable. Believers can recognize their source in our Abba Father. In the public square, the Principles can also be tested through history, research, cause-and-effect, and measurable outcomes. The argument becomes “show me,” not merely “agree with my theology.”

WePEG1787^TM converts that approach into a Citizen’s Measure. It asks candidates to indicate their level of agreement with the Governing Principles so WTP can compare what candidates say they will do with what experience shows works.

Religious Liberty: The Lesson of Church-State Power

Christian history itself warns us why “God says” cannot become the governing method of the state. Once the government is empowered to enforce a single religious interpretation, that same power can be turned against another believer tomorrow.

From imperial Christianity through Europe’s religious conflicts, Christians experienced both sides of church-state power. The American answer was not to remove faith from society. It was to protect free exercise while denying the government the authority to establish a national religious rule.

That makes Religious Liberty a natural unifying mission for ecclesiae that may never agree doctrinally. We do not need one denomination, one worship style, or one prophetic interpretation. We need the Social Liberty that allows each ecclesia to remain faithful to its own calling.

Our Instrument Is WePEG1787^TM

Past generations faced kings, established religions, empires, and, at times, armed conflict. WTP possess a different instrument: constitutional self-government.

WePEG1787^TM is designed to move elections away from personalities, political-faction loyalty, emotional advertising, and the politics of personal destruction. Candidates score Governing Principles from 0 to 10 in agreement. Voters can then ask a much better question than “Which side are you on?” — “How will you govern?”

A score creates accountability before and after the election. It gives first-time and lesser-funded candidates a way to compete on Principles. It gives voters something more durable than campaign promises. And it gives citizens of very different faiths and backgrounds a common measure without requiring them to agree about the source of every Principle.

The Pastor’s Call to Arms

The call is not to turn worship centers into campaign headquarters. It is not to endorse a political faction. It is not to condemn half the country.

The call is to awaken believers to the spiritual value of Social and Religious Liberty; teach that our civic life is included in “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”; equip the Body of Christ to recognize governing Truth; and release believers to do the civic work that belongs to WTP.

Pulpit leaders can protect the pulpit from partisan warfare while refusing to fall into civic silence. The Body can learn the Principles, score them personally, ask candidates to score them, share the measure in love, vote, and then measure representatives by how they actually govern.

Armor up. Stand in Truth. Equip the saints. Then send WTP into the civic arena with the Citizen’s Measure.

A Peaceful Call to Action

Godly Civics^TM  is not asking pastors to recreate Bonhoeffer’s Germany, the American Revolution, or any other historical crisis. We have been given a peaceful constitutional path.

The mission is to preserve Social Liberty and Religious Liberty for posterity, so the Gospel remains free to reach as many souls as possible.

The pulpit equips. The Body acts. WTP measure.
The ballot decides.
